One of my most favorite things in the world is watching two people get engaged. It makes me cry every single time, no matter what. It just made my day to get a call from Jason’s mom, who needed major help in pulling off a surprise engagement nearly 1000 miles from their home in Alabama. She asked if I was interested in helping coordinate and shoot… YES! I was so excited to be chosen to help!!

I spoke with Jason a few days later and got the details… Casey was going on a “girls trip” to NYC with Jason’s mom, cousin, sister, and grandma. Jason wanted to fly up and surprise her in central park. He had an idea of using the New York Times to hide the rest of Casey’s big surprise…her parents, brother, future father-in-law and future Grandpa-in-law had also flown up to support Jason and help him pop the question! I went to work scouting, drawing diagrams, making schedules….I was sooooo excited!

I got up early that morning and made sure I had plenty of newspapers. I put my hubby to work painting the words while I prepped. They turned out perfect….complete with eye holes so that everyone could see Casey’s face without her seeing them!

We had to ask a bunch of strangers if they would help us, and surprisingly almost everyone was more than eager to be a part of such a special day! As Casey came around the corner at the Bethesda Fountain, she would look over and just see a group of tourists. His mom started clapping, which got Casey’s attention, and the group all moved to the right, slowly revealing the painted newspapers, and finally, her man….Jason was waiting at the end.

Seriously, I think Casey stood with her mouth open for an eternity! I have so many shots of this face! Jason rescued her from her shock and that’s when the tears started to flow…

Little did she know that the rest of their immediate family was hiding behind those newspapers!

After Jason formally got down on one knee and presented her with the ring, Casey’s brother just couldn’t wait any longer! There was a lot of crying and laughing going on at this point….I had a hard time keeping my composure too!

What a fun day! I am so thankful that I got to be a part of such a special moment for these two. I LOVE getting to meet my client’s families, especially when they have that southern drawl I miss so much! After the big reveal, we wandered around Central Park for an hour or so to do a traditional engagement session:

Congratulations Jason & Casey!!! Thank you for allowing me to capture this amazing day! xoxo
